The Performer
Paul Derrett studied at The Royal College of Music with Nicholas
Danby, Richard Popplewell and Herbert Howells. A prize-winner
of The Royal College of Organists, his present posts are those
of Director of Music at The Crypt School, Gloucester and Organist
of St.Gregory's Priory, Cheltenham. He is a busy recitalist,
and recitals in 1998 included ten cathedrals. He has made several
solo recordings which have been well-received by the musical press
and public alike, in particular his CD's of collected works by
Henri Mulet and Guy Weitz. At a time when record companies (in
the main) still seem to push the same few popular organ works
and favoured composers, he actively seeks out lesser-known works
for organ that deserve greater public attention. Suggestions for
additions to his repertoire are always welcomed. He has practical
experience as an organ-builder and tries to use this working knowledge
of the instrument to help him display both music and instrument
to best advantage.
